Malifora on the NES

Malifora is a gypsy woman and seer living in Moonglow. She once served on the Great Council, and is mother to Malik.

Description[edit]

During Ultima V, she was a valuable source of information to the Avatar, imparting to the hero the mantra of Honesty and the Word of Power which would open Dungeon Deceit. She also could scry the location of Blackthorn's keep, achieve brief visions of the shards of the Gem of Immortality, and was able to divine that the hero would have need of Lord British's Crown Jewels. If the Avatar asked Malifora about the Shadowlords, she claimed their magic to be so powerful that she could not see beyond their dark veil.[1]

After her divination, she asked the Avatar for a donation of fifteen pieces of gold in return for her aid.

Ultima V: Lazarus[edit]

This is an Ultima V: Lazarus-related article or section. The information within may not apply to Ultima V or other Ultima games.

In Ultima V: Lazarus, Malifora was a former member of the Great Council who had been forced to go into hiding after the rise of Blackthorn's regime, pretending to be a nameless gypsy and fortuneteller living in a wagon on the outskirt of Moonglow. Returning to her true calling, Malifora and her son Malik made their living through crafts and small jobs, as well as providing fortune telling for those who sought her out. She especially felt being in hiding was difficult for her son due to the necessity of him being constantly wary about making friends. The gypsy instantly recognized the hero, and willing admitted her true identity, telling the Avatar how she hid from the current monarch for he sought the Word of Power for Dungeon Deceit, fallax. She further had visions of the Mantra of Honesty, ahm.[2]

Malifora despised Blackthorn's reign and hoped for the return of the true king Lord British. Should the Avatar express interest in the Shadowlords, Malifora told the hero that the astronomer Zachariah had been conducting research on those same creatures. Using a mystical orb, she was able to communicate the hero's arrival in Moonglow to Zachariah,[3] and gave the hero a key to enter the elderly man's observatory.

Asked about her glassware, Malifora noticed that her most precious creation, the Crystal Tear, had been stolen. Her only recent visitors had been Donn Piatt and Shalira, suggesting the hero speak with both of these individuals. She told the hero that Shalira was a graduate of the Lycaeum who was currently deciding whether to join the Oppression, while Donn Piatt was the Oppression head in Moonglow who frequently visited Malifora to discuss the Virtues. Donn Piatt and Shalira would both deny knowledge of the stolen item,[4][5] but Shalira would direct the Avatar to Malik, stating he often saw the comings and goings at Malifora's tent. Malik admitted to the hero that he had stolen it to prove himself to some other boys in the town, and in the excitement of his triumph, he had dropped it off the Moonglow pier into the water, and had been unable to locate it. Malik pleaded with the Avatar to help him find the lost glassware.[6]

The Avatar could find the Crystal Tear in a hawk's nest directly to the north of the Lycaeum. The gypsy would not wish for the true culprit to be revealed, only caring if he was sorry for his crime, rewarding the hero with the magical Crystal Flame.

Should the Avatar desire a fortunetelling, Malifora would reveal Lord British's Crown rested within the Palace of Blackthorn while Lord British's amulet lay deep within the Underworld.

Trivia[edit]

  • In the original Ultima V, Malifora is described as an "old, strangely familiar gypsy", indicating that she is possibly the same gypsy from the game's character creation.
