Garth is one of the Great Captains of Fawn, a city on the Serpent Isle. He appears in Ultima VII Part Two.
Description[edit]
Garth came from a wealthy family with powerful connections[1]. At a young age, he was appointed as one of the three Great Captains of the city (those tasked with assisting Fawn's ruler, Lady Yelinda), despite having never been to sea[2]. Garth was not particularly well suited for the job, preferring to spend time chasing young women, but he still accepted the responsibilities that came with the office. He primarily represented the interest of the merchant captains.
Since he was one of the younger people of the city, Garth was sympathetic to "the Cause," an underground movement led by a young woman, Alyssand, working with a group of sailors and Fellowship members recently arrived from Britannia. Garth found them cordial enough, though he did not object when Kylista, the Priestess of Beauty, convinced Lady Yelinda to exile them from the city. Garth agreed with Alyssand that the Oracle of Beauty had become more of a political tool. He suspected Voldin, the senior man among the Great Captains, to be responsible. However, Garth was unwilling to risk his own neck by getting too involved. Sensing this, Alyssand did not trust him[3].
When the Teleport Storms began ravaging Serpent Isle, Fawn was especially hard hit, losing its entire fishing fleet in addition to the Lighthouse. Garth was charged by Lady Yelinda with finding a way to sustain the people until the storms passed. During that time, the Avatar arrived in Fawn with three companions. One of them was soon charged with heresy and put on trial. Garth was completely unwilling to risk himself, going so far as to commit perjury to protect himself. However, during the course of the trial, it was discovered that Voldin and Kylista had indeed been manipulating the city for some time by secretly controlling the Oracle. Voldin was slain and Kylista jailed, leaving Garth and Joth the remaining Great Captains.
Like most of the citizens of Fawn, Garth was killed when the Insanity Bane (possessing the body of Iolo) destroyed the city.
Lore[edit]
“ | The Great Captains, Delphynia explained, served as advisors to Lady Yelinda, the leader of Fawn. Their names were Joth, Garth and Voldin.
... As I approached them, they interrupted their conversation and looked at me expectantly. I told them I was looking for information on their city. They took the time to tell me that their job was to deal with the day-to-day running of the city so that their fair leader, Lady Yelinda, would not have to be bothered with such mundane matters. They also told me that Kylista served their city as the Priestess of Beauty, and gave me directions to the temple so that I might meet with her. Although they were polite and helpful, their attitude was somewhat patronizing. – from Balancing the Scales (Ultima VII Part Two)

Notes[edit]
- A search of Garth's home on the southwestern most corner of the city will turn up 141 filari, a plate breastplate, and some invisibility powder.
- If the Avatar is female, Garth declares her to be more beautiful than both Kylista and Yelinda.
- If called as a witness at the trial, Garth viciously slanders the defendant--but is revealed to have completely confused the defendant with one of the Avatar's other companions!
- Garth has an older brother who runs his family's shipping business. It is unknown whether this brother survived Mad Iolo's attack on Fawn.[4]
