Finnigan is the mayor of Trinsic during Ultima VII.

Description[edit]

Finnigan, originally from Britain, arrived in Trinsic three years prior to the events of Ultima VII, and assumed the position of mayor shortly thereafter. At the time of the Avatar's arrival, Finnigan was approaching the scene of Inamo and Christopher's murder. Taking the word of Iolo, a friend of his, that the true Avatar stood before him, he charged the hero with investigating the killing, although he still harbored doubts regarding the champion's identity. During this time, he kept the city guard on alert, refusing to let anyone, including the Avatar, enter or leave Trinsic without a password.

Finnigan could prove helpful in informing the Avatar of potential leads relating to the crime, and pointed the hero in the direction of both Spark, (Christopher's son) and Gilberto (a guard who had been injured the night of the murder). He also was the first person to mention similarities between the crime and the ritual slaying of Finster of Britain four years prior.[1]

Eventually, once the Avatar had satisfactorily conducted inquiries in Trinsic, Finnigan gave the Avatar a brief quiz on Britannian geography to ease his doubts as to the hero's person, before revealing the password: "Blackbird." He charged the Avatar thereafter with finding and apprehending Christopher's murderers, and paid the hero a sum of 100 gold coins, promising as much again once justice had been visited upon the culprits.

In more general conversation with Finnigan, the mayor would lament the seeming decline of virtues within BritanniaHonor in particular. He would mention that the Rune of Honor had been stolen from the city long ago by one claiming to be the Avatar, and that he felt the empty pedestal on which the rune once stood was sadly symbolic of the times.[2]

Like many people in positions of power at the time, Finnigan regarded the Fellowship as a positive force upon society, and did not suspect their involvement in Christopher's death.

Lore[edit]

Very little out of the ordinary occurs here in Trinsic. We have the standard collection of workers and tradesman. The many guards who watch over our walls are loyal and stalwart, especially Gilberto, who patrols the docks.

Trivia[edit]

  • Finnigan manages the copy protection, in that he will only give the password to leave Trinsic after the Avatar manages to answer the questions pertaining to the latitude or longitude of various geographical features, such as that the player would have to refer to the cloth map included with the game.
  • In the Key to the Black Gate, Finnigan provides Anton with information about the city of Trinsic, and his description of the area is a part of the work which the scholar compiles on behalf of the Avatar.[3]
  • Despite his promises of a future reward upon the apprehension of Christopher's murderers, Finnigan has no additional dialogue options once Hook and Forskis are slain.
  • In the SNES-port of Ultima VII, Finnigan will not speak of Christopher's kidnapping until the Avatar is directed to him by Petre. Once he is informed of the crime, the mayor asks for a markedly reduced investigation in comparison to the PC version of the game, requiring the hero only to identify Hook as a likely suspect before he will divulge the password.[4]
