Dungeon solutions for Ultima II
The sole, essential purpose of the dungeons and towers of Ultima II in the Stranger's quest to defeat Minax is the tri-lithium they contain to power a rocket ship. Additionally, they offer a wide variety of gold and other treasure for the brave adventurer, and they are the only places where magic works. Note that tools are essential to get through these mazes.
There is a total of seven dungeons in Ultima II:
- Dungeon in Greenland (all ages, but not Pangean in some ports)
- Tower in South America (1423 B.C.)
- Tower in Africa (1990 A.D.)
- Tower on Jupiter (2112 A.D.)
- Dungeon on Jupiter (2112 A.D.)
- Dungeon on Mercury (2112 A.D.)
- Dungeon on Pluto (2112 A.D.)
Towers[edit]
There is one tower per age, except during Pangaea.
Dungeons[edit]
Earth has only one dungeon; in Greenland. All other dungeons are on extraterrestrial planets which can be accessed only during the 2112 A.D aftermath.
In many ports of the game (e.g. MS-DOS), the dungeon in Greenland cannot be accessed during Pangea age, while in other ports (e.g. the C64) it can be entered normally.
Notes[edit]
- "Floor 0" for all towers and dungeons are the closest to the surface, meaning floor 0 is the lowest in towers and the highest in dungeons.
- In some ports (e.g. C64), dungeon floors are numbered using hexadecimal numbering, that is more natural for a computer.
- On the final levels, all chests contain tri-lithium.
Bugs[edit]
- Main article: Bugs § Ultima II
- In the C64 port, sometimes a long, dead-end corridor opens up branching out from floor 1 of the tower in 1990 A.D.
- In the MS-DOS version, Jupiter’s tower has a tri-lithium chest where there should be a wall. Traversing through this passage will cause the player to appear a few tiles away and in the opposite direction.
- In the MS-DOS version, the only ladder on the lowest level of the dungeon on Pluto goes down. Climbing down it (from level 15) will cause the engine to become unstable. Once arriving on this level, the only way to leave is with magic, like Surface or Ladder Up.
- See Ultima II Upgrade Patch for potential updates.
Trivia[edit]
- On Western computer ports, dungeons and towers are completely optional, because tri-lithium can be dropped by defeated enemies on the world surface. This was changed in the Japan-only ports.
- Dungeons and towers are the only place in the game where magic spells can be used.
- The walls on various floors of the tower in 1423 B.C. form words and symbols, including "ULTIMA II", "LORD BRIT" and "ZAB" (Lord British and Keith Zabalaoui, authors of the game), a Christian cross, and "EAT ME".
- The walls on the bottom floor of the dungeon on Jupiter take the form of Richard Garriott’s home telephone number back in 1982.[1]
- The floors of the tower in 1990 A.D. get smaller as they go up, suggesting that it is a pyramid. In fact, its location on the world surface corresponds to Egypt.
