Calumny is a druid living in Yew at the time of Ultima IV.

Description[edit]

Teacher to the young Flatbush,[1] Calumny was a solemn alchemist who had developed the spell which would come to be known as Rel Tym, a cantrip which enabled those who cast it to move faster relative to those around them. Should the questing Stranger inquire, Calumny would prove willing to explain the composition of reagents necessary for such magic.[2]

Should the hero learn of Calumny's possession of rare mandrake roots from the Folley Tavern in Paws, the magician could be asked where he got his supply and would indicate the Fens of the Dead and the Bloody Plains.[3]

Trivia[edit]

  • Calumny is one of many characters in Ultima IV who inform the player that any spell that calls for more than a single portion of a reagent in the Book of Mystic Wisdom actually requires but a single portion of that reagent in actual gameplay.
  • In the Nintendo remake of Ultima IV, Calumny is the author of a famed dissertation on "Manroot" which is housed in the Lycaeum. The scholar reading it, however, observes that the page specifying where the herb can be harvested is missing, leading the Stranger to seek him out in Yew. Here the Stranger will learn that the well-lettered Calumny is in the midst of a comprehensive volume on Britannian magical theory, of which he has already written 69 of 105 pages.[4]
  • In Yoko Tanaka's manga, Ultima: The Quest of the Avatar, Calumny serves a much more prominent role, acting as magical tutor to the young protagonist of the comic, Deane. In the course of the story, Calumny does, in fact, assist the party in the gathering of mandrake root, explaining in detail how to harvest them without killing the tiny humanoid plants which produce them.[5]
