Andrio is a novice Moonshadian mage studying at Serpent Isle's Seminarium. He appears in Ultima VII Part Two.
Description[edit]
Andrio was one of Fedabiblio's two students at the time of the Avatar's adventures on Serpent Isle. An enthusiastic scholar with a developing interest in the greater world, he was eager to hear stories of Avatar's adventures, and he was glad to discuss his own magical ambitions, mentioning that he was working to develop a spell to transmute human flesh into wood and that he hoped someday to be as skilled a magician as the MageLord Filbercio. If queried about his project in more detail, he would explain that he wanted to allow warriors to develop a woodlike skin to shield them from blows and that his fellow student and friend, Freli, was working on a similar spell involving stone. He would also mention that both of them had been directed to consult Torrissio, given his mastery of life magic, but that he was too afraid to address him given his ruthless temper.[1]
Following the release of the Banes of Chaos and Shamino the Anarch's attack on the city, Andrio and Freli numbered among the few Moonshadians to survive. Magister Fedabiblio, however, was turned to stone in the midst of his attempt to combat the Bane, leaving his pupils to wonder as to how he might be restored.[2] Andrio could offer little direct aid, but he was able to suggest that the Avatar seek the help of Torrissio, mentioning that he had overheard him speaking to Columna regarding the Philanderer's Friend.[3]

Trivia[edit]
- The model for Andrio's character portrait is Ultima VII Part Two playtester Andrew Hofmann.[4]
- Should the Avatar speak to Andrio about Freli while the latter is present, the two will squabble about who is a better mage, and the hero may end up interjecting to stop their bickering.[5]
- While Andrio will not make mention of it, he and Topo are apparently friends. This is somewhat atypical of Moonshadian society, given that Andrio is a mage and Topo a mundane.[6]
- The Avatar may consult Andrio following the kidnapping of one of the companions after Filbercio's banquet. (Freli, in fact, recommends that the hero do so.[7]) If informed about the details of the case, Andrio will mention his personal suspicions regarding Torrissio while directing the hero to consult Bucia regarding any recent gossip.[8]
- According to the original design documents for Serpent Isle, Andrio was intended to have accidentally flooded the Seminarium with headless after a spell of his went awry. Freli was then supposed to send the Avatar on a quest to rescue Andrio from the swarm of monsters.[9]
- All the inhabitants of Moonshade have Italian or pseudo-Italian names. Andrio is very similar to the English name Andrew and the Italian name Andrea (this is a male name in Italy; the Italian female form is Andreina).
