Freli is an apprentice magician studying in Serpent Isle's city of Moonshade. He appears in Ultima VII Part Two.
Description[edit]
Freli's mother was a Moonshadian Mundane known as Elissia who emigrated to the mainland city of Fawn and was married to a provisioner there named Delin.[1] She died giving birth to Freli, leaving her husband deeply grief-stricken, and Delin's sorrows were compounded when the Magister of Moonshade discovered the boy's magical potential and took him away to become a student at the Seminarium.[2]
Under Fedabiblio's tutelage, Freli grew into a brilliant young scholar, becoming his mentor's favorite pupil[3] and growing to be fast friends with his fellow apprentice, Andrio. He was an ebullient and confident young man at the time of the Avatar's arrival in Moonshade, excited at the prospect of hearing tell of the hero's adventures beyond the city.[4] If spoken to about his origins, he would ask the Avatar to deliver a letter to his father and sister in Fawn, and the missive would bring Delin great joy should the hero deliver it to him, resulting in the old man offering the Avatar a one-time discount on a purchase from his shop.[5]
After the loosing of the Banes of Chaos upon the world, the inhabitants of the Seminarium were among the few Moonshadians to survive Shamino the Anarch's attack on the city. In an attempt to protect his apprentices, however, Fedabiblio confronted the Bane in magical combat, and Freli watched as his master was turned into a stone statue in the midst of the battle.[6] The Avatar was eventually able to restore the magician to life, however, reuniting the Magister with his pupils.
Lore[edit]
“ | "He's probably here to escape Freli ," Stefano said. Apparently Freli is a young mage at the school. "I hear Freli has a lot of promise, but at the rate he vexes Fedabiblio, some wonder if he'll ever get out of the Seminarium." – from Balancing the Scales (Ultima VII Part Two)

Trivia[edit]
- The model for Freli's character portrait is Ultima VII Part Two programmer, Charles Cafrelli.[7]
- Should the Avatar speak to Freli about Torrissio while Andrio is present, the two apprentices will fight over whether or not Andrio is afraid of the artificer.[8]
- According to the original design documents for Serpent Isle, Freli, not Shamino the Anarch, was responsible for Fedabiblio's petrification, due to some manner of childish prank. Freli was also to give the Avatar a quest to rescue Andrio, who had accidentally swarmed the Seminarium with headless.[9]
