This article is about the effect of poisoning. For the spell Poison, see Poison.

Poisoning is a game concept where the Stranger, an NPC or a monster can become poisoned through magical, artificial or natural means. Usually, the effect is to drain the victim’s health for a time, although, sometimes the health drain is instant. In some games (e.g. Ultima IV), this will eventually kill the subject unless a cure is applied. In other games (e.g. Ultima VII), this will drain a limited amount of the subject’s health over time, and then the poison will dissipate.

Ultima IX has the added innovation of graduating the level of poisoning such that multiple applications of treatment may be required to cure the patient.

Causes[edit]

  • A magical attack, such as Poison
  • An attack from a venomous weapon, such as a poison dagger
  • An attack from a venomous monster, such as a python
  • Merely passing through a poisonous environment, such as a swamp

Cure[edit]

Curing is only possible while the poison is in the process of harming the patient and not after it has be expended.
