Species: rabbit
Appearances
Ultima VII Part Two
Location: Mountains of Freedom

Buggs is a creature taking the shape of a rabbit that may be found within Serpent Isle’s Mountains of Freedom. It appears in Ultima VII Part Two.

Description[edit]

Like many of the inhabitants of the dungeon's "slave pit," Buggs' origins are unknown and its nature unclear. Despite appearing to be a rabbit, the signs around its enclosure warn of its ferocity, as does its master's instructions for its care. In keeping with its seemingly lapine nature, the old man responsible for tending the menagerie was responsible for feeding it regular provisions of carrots, which it was to receive on a golden plate befitting its supposedly noble heritage.[1]

When the Avatar fed the small beast, it transformed briefly into a beautiful woman, thanking the hero's kindness with a bouquet of flowers. This strange occurrence (like many of the strange occurrences within Freedom) was never fully explained.

Lore[edit]

[T]ake great care of my small furry prize. Do not be fooled by its diminutive size, it hath taken the lives of many a foolhardy man who dared to approach thinking it might make a tasty morsel. Thou shouldst treat it with as much respect as thou wouldst bestow upon me. If thou dost not, either one of us could end thy miserable existence. In the supply room, thou wilt find a year's worth of carrots for Buggs. Feed him but one per day. Place the carrots upon his golden plate -- 'tis the only way that he will feed. He is of royal lineage -- a born predator. If thou dost not, thou mayest find that thou art his next meal.

Trivia[edit]

  • Buggs doubtlessly takes its name from the Warner Brothers character Buggs Bunny, and its alleged ferocity is most likely a nod to the deadly rabbit that appears in the film Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
  • Despite the numerous attestations to its deadly nature, Buggs may be slain as easily as a normal rabbit and produces edible meat when killed.
