Zaria is a sorceress imprisoned within the Pits of Carnage. She appears in Ultima Underworld II.
Description[edit]
Zaria was second in renown only to Dorstag at the time of the Avatar's arrival in the pits, and was anxious to solidify her position in the chauvinist warrior's society, well aware that many judged her weak on account of her sex. Using her magics to give herself an edge against her opponents in the arena, Zaria hoped to eventually slay Dorstag and take his place as de facto leader of the colony, but was waiting until she had mastered the Missile Protection spell before she issued a formal challenge.[1]
The Avatar would quickly learn of Zaria's position after speaking to the men of the pits,[2][3][4] and could decide that defeating her might earn the victor enough prestige that Dorstag would accept a challenge. The hero could either challenge her outright or bait her to a challenge by drawing attention to her femininity.
If the Avatar decided to approach the problem of Dorstag without involving Zaria, she may have later aimed to usurp the hero if appearing to be the new authority in the colony. The Avatar would, at this point, have the option of telling Zaria of a means to escape the pits and that she might rule uncontested in the hero's stead. The sorceress would gladly accept this offer, albeit with some disappointment that she could not face the Avatar in combat.[1]
