Thariand is a librarian at the Lycaeum in Ultima VI.
Description[edit]
Thariand was responsible for organizing the books of the Lycaeum using the Dewey Decimal System to sort all of the library's works. Although, he was usually busy with his magical studies, he was able to recommend some tomes for the hero from the categories of fiction, non-fiction, and reference. If the hero had a hard time understanding the Dewey Decimal System, then he also recommended a reference guide. Thariand was proud to have studied under the mage Nicodemus, and all those under the wise master's tutelage bore the Blue Star of Nicodemus. The librarian could direct the Avatar to Nicodemus' house near Yew. Thariand remarked that if he could learn all the books in the Lycaeum, he would be the mightiest mage in all Britannia. As the hero left, he reminded the Avatar that all books borrow must be returned by the next bipolar lunar conjunction[1]
The Ultima 6 Project[edit]
This is an Ultima 6 Project-related NPC article or section. The information within may not apply to Ultima VI or other Ultima games.
In The Ultima 6 Project, Thariand could give explicit instructions on how to find the novel The Caverns of Freitag by Gertan, who saved the Mystic Isles from the dragon Freitag. He was unsure if Gertain still lived, but was assured the tale was not a work of fiction, for the brave warrior had once lived in a small town near Britain. Unfortunately, his reference guide on the Dewey Decimal System was out for the next week. The Avatar could find it beside a dead man in a far-away corner of the library and return it to Thariand. The Avatar also could decide to pay the overdue fee for the book.

Trivia[edit]
- The blue star worn by Nicodemus and Thariand is a reference to fantasy author Marion Zimmer Bradley’s Lythande anthology, in which the foreheads of mages are tattooed with a blue pentagram.
- Thariand's counterpart in reality is Scott Morizot, an Amtgard player who assumed this persona in the organization's former Grand Duchy of Barad Duin, where Ultima VI writer Dr. Cat and artist-writer Manda Dee (Penumbra) also participated and, like Richard Garriott with the Society for Creative Anachronism, subsequently portrayed many of its members as characters within the game.[2][3]
