Talk:Janus Island
Canonicity of name[edit]
Figured I should open a discussion about this. Considering we treat the SNES port of U7 as anomalous in every other regard (rightly, I believe), I don't agree with adopting "Janus Island" as canon when the entire series otherwise leaves it unnamed. However, I do recognise the article needs a title of some sort, so I can understand using this name in the absence of any practical alternative. Even so, I think we should remain consistent with the canonical games (and our own policy) by avoiding its use elsewhere unless absolutely necessary (e.g. navigation templates, etc.). --Terilem (talk) 05:09, 26 December 2016 (MST)
- The question is reasonable, but I'm not sure what the alternative is. The only thing I can think of is deleting the article, which is about as reasonable as cutting off one's nose to spite one's face. What I'm a little more certain of is removing the name from text like: "Janus Island in Ultima IX" and "Janus Island is famous" (especially if it's not known to be famous). The mention of it in the NES port pic's caption is fine. The Ultra-Mind (talk) 13:44, 26 December 2016 (MST)
- Yeah, agreed on all counts. I'm fine with leaving the article title intact since, as discussed, there isn't an alternative; I just don't think the name should be adopted throughout descriptive text (e.g. the Dagger Isle article and, formerly, Deceit). I might add this is also an issue with Valarian Islands and Deadman's Island, but those discussions went unresolved. --Terilem (talk) 19:24, 26 December 2016 (MST)
The DI issue seems to be identical to the JI issue. But The VI issue seemed settled. What do you see as outstanding? The Ultra-Mind (talk) 19:20, 28 December 2016 (MST)
- The same issue: Calling the islands adjacent to Spiritwood "Valarian Islands" is dubious given they are labelled as such only on the U4 NES map, which contains other non-canonical names. It is also a mispelling occasionally used by Origin in reference to the Valorian Isles, a completely different cluster. But, like here, I'm not really sure what to do about it. --Terilem (talk) 23:05, 28 December 2016 (MST)
