Silver John is a tall pirate living in Buccaneer's Den during Ultima IV.
Description[edit]
The Stranger could meet Silver John at the Captain Black Tavern, where the pirate would boast of how he and his companions raided the coasts of Britannia, pillaging and burning as they went. The rugged sailor would then ask if the hero were a pirate, and would advise the Stranger to leave quickly if not.[1]
Trivia[edit]
- Answering Silver John's question "Art thou a pirate?" affirmatively will cost the player five points of Humility. Answering it negatively will result in a gain of five points of Humility.
- In the Nintendo remake of Ultima IV (where most character names were omitted and dialogue was significantly modified), Silver John can be identified with the pirate outside the pub, where one would normally find Boris. An unvirtuous answer to his question will cost the player some Honesty and Justice; a virtuous answer will result in a gain of Honesty and Justice.[2]
- Silver John's name may, in fact, be based upon that of the famous fictional pirate Long John Silver from Robert Louis Stevenson's novel Treasure Island. Another character who may derive his name from the famous antagonist is Long John Leary.
