Short Round is a small child living in Yew during Ultima IV.

Description[edit]

Short Round would tell the Stranger that he worked for a man named "Jones" or "Indi". His employer, however, appeared to be away on a quest at that moment, leading the child to ask about the hero's own adventures and if fun is to be had on them. Should the adventurer answer affirmatively, Round would suggest writing to Lord British to tell him. If the hero claimed not to be having fun, on the other hand, the child would offer his condolences and best wishes that the experience improve.[1]

Trivia[edit]

  • Short Round (aka "Kennon Wong") is a character from the 1984 film Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, which had been released one year before Ultima IV.
  • In the Master System port of Ultima IV (where most character names were omitted and dialogue was significantly modified), Short Round was replaced by Henry Jones, who is the father of Henry Junior "Indiana" Jones in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.[2]
  • When the Japanese developers remade Ultima IV for the Famicom/NES, Short Round's name was erroneously considered "given name" plus "family name", therefore the Japanese developers swapped them, as it is customary in that region. "Round Short" was the transliterated in a form similar to "Ra-nu-do-so-to". Later, when the game was localized into English, "Ra-nu-do-so-to" was shortened and rendered as "Ramus".
  • In the NES remake of Ultima IV, Short Round-Ramus is given a different function. A druid in town suggests to ask Ramus, instead of Talfourd, about the Rune of Justice. Then, Ramus relays the hero to Vorpal, as Talfourd originally did.[3]
