Rutherford is the owner and proprietor of the Checquered Cork tavern and inn of Minoc in Ultima VII.
Description[edit]
A former pirate, Rutherford had made a sagacious decision to change careers after a near brush with Hook had deprived him of his right arm and eye. Finding a new livelihood in the relative peace of Minoc, Rutherford ran the rustic inn which served as a center of social life in the city of Sacrifice, tending the bar with a devoted (albeit not always quiet sanitary) hand.[1]
Should the Avatar speak to Rutherford in the wake of the gruesome mutilation killings of Frederico and Tania, the tavern keeper would speak to the strangeness of such violence in an otherwise quiet town, but would eventually prove helpful in confirming the murder as Hook's work – being all too familiar with the man's past savagery. He could also verify that the Crown Jewel's presence at port, providing further evidence of the assassin's presence to the inquiring hero.[1]
Outside of such morbid discourse, Rutherford could also speak to the current affairs of the commerce-driven city, speaking as to the kerfuffle over Owen's statue and the prominence of the Fellowship. Being an apolitical sort, however, the disfigured barkeep had little to input into the various controversies of the day.[2]
Lore[edit]
“ | Speaking of that wretched city, Buccaneer's Den, Rutherford — he tends bar at the Checquered Cork — lost an arm in a scuffle with a pirate from Buccaneer's Den some time ago. The ruffian went by the name of Hook. If thou dost meet this man in thy travels, avoid him, for Rutherford says he has never met a more violent and evil man in all of Britannia. – from Key to the Black Gate (Ultima VII)
