Transcript: Paul

Paul is a bard living in Cove during the time of Ultima IV.

Description[edit]

The Stranger could meet Paul outside of The Healer Shop, where he was singing with Linda. Paul would tell the hero that he sang of love, and if asked he would perform for the Stranger, singing, "I light a candle to our love, in love our problems disappear. But all in all we soon discover that one and one is all we long to hear!"[1]

It is mentioned that the Stranger finds Paul strangely familiar, as if the hero might recognize in him a resemblance to a certain singer-songwriter on the planet Earth.

It should be mentioned that quoting this song in the village of Cove is rather appropriate, since it hints at the presence of the Candle of Love, hidden elsewhere in the same town.

Trivia[edit]

NES remake
  • Paul is a reference to singer Paul McCartney. The lines he sings are the opening lyrics of McCartney's song, "Pipes of Peace." The ex-Beatle's late wife, Linda McCartney, similarly appears as Linda, who goes on to sing the next lines of the song. Rabindranath Tagore, a character named for the Bengali poet who McCartney drew inspiration from in composing the song, is also present. These NPCs were inspired by Richard Garriott's fondness for the Pipes of Peace and Tug of War albums, which the Ultima creator had recently discovered.[2]
  • In the Nintendo remake of Ultima IV (where most character names were omitted and dialogue was significantly modified), Paul can be identified with the bard in the woods. He still talks about love, but now he also completes the information about the Candle of Love.[3]
