French physicist Marie Curie (1867-1934) is one of many historical figures on the original 1893 expedition to Mars.

Description[edit]

When the Avatar and company met her during Martian Dreams, Curie was living and working in the human settlement of Olympus. She quickly proved to be a storehouse of useful information about the radioactive element radium, and had learned much about the habits of the rockworms that dwelt near it. From her room, the Avatar was able to obtain a lead box and a set of tongs, with which to safely handle and store any radium they acquired in the future.[1]

Curie returned to Earth in the space cannon once the group's adventures on Mars were over.

Lore[edit]

This Polish-born French physicist discovered the radioactive properties of radium and polonium. In 1903 she was rewarded with the Nobel Prize for physics, followed by one for chemistry in 1911. She died of leukemia, no doubt caused by her pioneering research into the nature of radioactivity. Some of the Martian artifacts discovered by Lowell and others were powered by radioactive substances, making her expertise invaluable.
