Lord Herdic is a Virtue Peer whom Jordan Hawson, Althea and their companions meet in Merdaunt. He and his wife, Lady Alinore, hire the friends, as well as some men from Merdaunt, as rowers to take their ship up the river to Cove, where they seek to be enlightened at the Shrine of Compassion.
