Liana is the secretary to Mayor Auston of Vesper in Ultima VII.
Description[edit]
Liana is an official in Vesper known for her critical opinions of others. She readily shares her negative assessments of Vesper's residents, including Yongi (whom she criticizes for his drinking), Eldroth (whose failing memory she mocks), and Mara (whose perceived masculinity she disparages).[1]
Liana expresses prejudiced views against gargoyles, using the term “daemon” and could provide literature from the separatist Britannian Purity League calling for their deportation. She believes Mayor Auston is too indecisive on the issue and implies that she favors harsher measures against the gargoyle population.[2]
Trivia[edit]
- In the Key to the Black Gate, Liana provides Anton with information about Vesper. Her descriptions of the area are included in Anton's compiled work for the Avatar. In her conversation with Anton, Liana suggests that Auston may be considering the forcible deportation of the gargoyle population, although the mayor himself makes no such indication.[3]
- An earlier draft of the Ultima VII plot had Liana engaged to Vesper's constable, a man named Jon who does not appear in the final version of the game.[4]
- In the SNES-port of Ultima VII, Liana does not express ill-will toward the gargoyles, limiting her criticisms to the human residents of Vesper.[5]
- Dialogue in the Ultima VII usecode suggests that Cador and Mara might be killed in a barroom brawl (similar to Anmanivas and Foranamo) if the hero claims to be the Avatar. This event does not appear to be reproducible in the game.[6]
