Ironwit is a mountainman engineer living in the second level of the Abyss. He appears in Ultima Underworld. He has lost his blueprints which the Avatar can retrieve if only his complicated instructions can be followed.

Description[edit]

The Avatar found him on the second level of the Abyss. Ironwit told the Avatar that he was the engineer among the mountain-folk in the Abyss, although he seemed a little doddery. He asked the Avatar for help, since he had forgotten his blueprints in a room that was hard to reach and he had lost the key, and a flying potion was needed to reach the door, which was high up. Thankfully, one was in his - although also locked - supply cabinet. After the Avatar had managed to get the blueprints, Ironwit gave the Avatar another potion as a reward.

Later, like the others, he was rescued by Garamon, when the volcano erupted.

Lore[edit]

Here, you might find Ironwit, one of the mountainmen, once an engineer. I’m delighted to say that years of living in these gloomy, monstrous halls have addled his wits. All he can do these days is whine about his missing blueprints; his wretchedness is music to my ears. He knew where a valuable flying potion lies, but I set a potion of poison near it and confused him as to which is which.

Trivia[edit]

  • It's no wonder that Ironwit has so much trouble telling the two potions apart - the bad one is unidentifible. Regardless of the player's lore skill, using a Name Enchantment spell, or taking it to Dominus, it cannot be identified.
  • Ironwit's portrait show him with a red beard, yet his sprite is of a mountainman with a white beard. Interestingly, most the other mountainmen have white beards in their portraits but red beards on their sprites.
