Nexus of the Worlds
The Nexus of the Worlds is a passage between dimensions that briefly appears during the conclusion of Ultima VIII.
Description[edit]
The Nexus of the Worlds is of unknown origin, its exact nature similarly ambiguous other than to manifest as an overwhelmingly luminous environment that extends beyond visual acuity. The enigmatic realm appears bereft of any notable features save for a horizontal plane lined with rows of gargantuan, shimmering pillars that delineate walkways.
Whatever the nature of this cosmic waypoint, the Avatar would emerge here after overcoming the trials of Pagan and stepping through the energized Blackrock Obelisk, which the hero had reformed on the Ethereal Plane in a ritual to claim the mantle of Titan of Ether and escape imprisonment by the Guardian. The Nexus of the Worlds would not again be encountered by the Avatar, who returned to Earth following this transient event.
Trivia[edit]
- The Nexus of the Worlds is never mentioned in Ultima VIII, nor Ultima IX; it is, however, named in early design documents for the latter game, which initially was to have provided exposition regarding its existence in one of Hawkwind's books at Stonegate, intended at the time to host the opening sequence of gameplay. In this version of events, the Nexus was to have been brought into being by an ancient, immensely powerful race, the Ultima, to facilitate teleportation to any destination in the cosmos. Hawkwind, after revealing himself as the Time Lord, would have further explained that the Avatar had subconsciously made use of newfound powers, as the Titan of Ether, to return to Britannia from within the Nexus.[1]
