Gurnordir is a legendary chieftain of the goblins of Serpent Isle. He is mentioned in Ultima VII Part Two.
Description[edit]
According to the Monitorians, Gurnordir was a goblin king who used the powers of the legendary Helm of Courage to unify his people into the horde the led a near successful invasion of Monitor.[1] During this battle, the goblins made their way into the city but were eventually routed and slain by members of the Bear Command. Gurnordir was slain in the fray, and the Helm was seized by the Monitorians. Rechristened as the "Helm of Monitor," the artifact became the emblem by which the city's Knight Champion was recognized, as only knights who had attained this prestigious position had the right to wear it.[2]
Gurnordir's cremated remains also came to serve an important function in Monitorian culture. His ashes, which are supposedly consecrated to the ideals of martial prowess,[3] were enshrined in the Knight's Test. Here, through mystic means unknown, they summon the totemic animals that determine the Commands to which new knights are assigned. The initiate has only to mix his own blood with the ashes, and a wild beast -either a leopard, a wolf or a bear will appear.[4]
At the time of the Avatar's landing on Serpent Isle, the leader of the goblin horde was a chieftain who claimed to be one of Gurnordir's descendants: Pomdirgun.
