Fletchers and bowyers

Fletchers and bowyers are specialised shops for missile weapons and their ammunition; bows, crossbows, arrows and bolts, to name a few.

Description

While general weapons shops will often carry missile weapons, they never do in the broad selection and quality as these specialized shops, which however demand a higher price for their superior wares.

The bowyer that is held in highest regard throughout all of Britannia is Iolo Fitzowen, the proprietor of the establishment that has come to be called "Iolo's Bows", having branches in Britain and Serpent's Hold. It has the best selection and quality of all shops, but also the highest prices.

History

Age of Enlightenment

These specialized shops only appeared for the first time in Ultima V in form of Iolo's Bows, prior to this, they were integrated into weapon shops. Despite Iolo being an outlaw, business seemed to be a good as always. The situation essentially was the same in Ultima VI, with Iolo's Bows still being the main bowyer in Britannia, although ammunition production went to the fletcher Lynn during that time.

Age of Armageddon

The situation in Britannia changed little in the Age of Armageddon in Ultima VII, with Iolo's Bows still providing the most complete catalogue of missile weapons and their ammunition, although other provisioners and armouries by then at least sold ammunition and the basic bows and crossbows as well.

After the Great Cataclysm, Iolo's Bows appears to have been gone out of business by Ultima IX. Numerous fletchers and bowyers had appeared in Britannia, splintering the market in terms of prices and supply.
