Location: Lycaeum

Dufus is the apprentice of the sorceress Temme in Farthing in Ultima V.

Description[edit]

Meeting him during the events of Ultima V, Dufus spoke of how he was really proud of being her apprentice, hoping to be a mighty mage one day. He mentioned that Temme knew many great spells, something about which the Avatar would ask her later. Also Dufus mentioned that Seggallion had an interesting spyglass, with which he would study the stars at night, suggesting to ask the lord about it.[1]

Ultima V: Lazarus[edit]

Dufus proudly told the Avatar he was apprenticed to the mage Temme in Ultima V: Lazarus, saying he was lucky for the opportunity to live on Farthing and learn from such a talented magician.[2]

The young apprentice enjoyed his life on Farthing, but felt that it was sometimes a lonely existence without the company of another boy his age around. Still, he was glad to have the company of Quintin, the castle cook, enjoying talking to the man and eating his victuals. Dufus was enraptured by his talented master Temme, and bragged to the hero that she was the greatest mage ever, even once killing a giant rat with a single spell. Dufus also felt the castle's lord, Seggallion, was a good man, and remarked how he had once used the lord's spyglass to gaze at the stars, thus making everything seem much closer.

Dufus would also reveal he was caught in a mess he'd caused with Temme's equipment, noting that he had mistakenly given Temme her notes for the Vanish spell when asked for paper to use, and the spell components had been lost. The Avatar could either help remind Temme of the correct formula for her spell, thus keeping Dufus' secret, or could let Temme know of the young apprentice's mistake.[2]

The Ultima 6 Project[edit]

In The Ultima 6 Project, the now mid-thirties Dufus could be found teaching magic to budding young students at the Academy at the Lycaeum. He had left Farthing sometime before a great earthquake brought the island beneath the seas, and was saddened by the loss of life from the island's destruction. The magician loved now being in proximity to the Lycaeum, and its abundant books and wisdom.

Dufus immediately recognized the Avatar, but took a moment to find the confidence to introduce himself. He told the hero that his mentor Temme also taught at the Lycaeum, and even though he was now a mage in his own right, he was glad to still have her advice. After speaking to Temme about Dufus' lack of discipline in his studies and teachings, the younger mage laughed off his mentor's assertions that his lack of seriousness made him weak. He felt that magic was a way of way of life, and that one must find joy in life, encouraging his students to also explore the joy of magic. Dufus proposed that the creativity of his students kept him young, and he constantly learned anew through their tricks. Even though the two fundamentally disagreed on their outlooks, Dufus told the hero he still highly valued Temme as his mentor.
