The comets seen in Ultima V

A comet is a celestial object seen as a sort of sign of doom. In Ultima V, they are portents of the appearance of Shadowlords in certain towns.

Description

The belief in Britannia holds that comets were signs of impending doom. The Avatar found that by monitoring the skies with a spyglass the towns that were about to be subjected to the Shadowlords’ malevolent influences could be predicted. Each planet is associated with a Virtue as is each town. Thus which ever planet experiences an approaching comet, the associated town will soon experience a Shadowlord. This allowed the Avatar to avoid those cities until the evil wraith had left.

These comets were never again observed after the defeat of all three Shadowlords.
