Brother Antos is a wise mystic seen in Ultima II and Ultima IV. He is likely a relation of Father Antos and Sister Antos. He first appeared in multiple temporal instances within the Castle of Lord British on Minax's Earth, and later appeared within the world of Britannia.
History[edit]
In Ultima II, Brother Antos dwelt within the castle of Lord British along with the keep's bishop, Bob. He was a strange individual who, like Lord British himself and Andre the French Chef, followed the castle when it moved through time, from the fifteenth century B.C. to the late twentieth century A.D. During the Stranger’s journeys on the dystopic Earth in those two eras, he exhorted the hero to seek out his father amongst the stars,[1] likely knowing that the champion would need the blessing of the elder Father Antos in order to ultimately defeat Minax. When the castle was magically transferred from Minax's dystopic Earth back to Sosaria, Brother Antos naturally returned to his homeworld, too.
Later, in Ultima IV, an old Brother Antos appeared in Britannia, living within the heart of Empath Abbey. The Stranger, likely directed by the mage Zorin, was able to ask Antos about the Candle of Love, which the hero would need to enter the Stygian Abyss. Still wise in the ways of things, Brother Antos was able to impart that meditation at the shrine of the abbey may give the aspirant Avatar clues as to the location of the artifact.[2]
Trivia[edit]
- In the novelization of Ultima IV in Ultima: The Avatar Adventures, Brother Antos claims that Father Antos, rather than being his parent, is his twin.[3]
- In the Nintendo remake of Ultima IV, Brother Antos tells the Stranger the location of the Candle of Love directly, indicating that it lies within a hidden village off of the greatest inland lake.[4]
- Brother Antos appears in Yoko Tanaka's manga, Ultima: The Quest of the Avatar. The protagonist of the comic, Deane, consults him at Empath Abbey, looking for information about his lost brother Shiva. After meditating with the sage, the young paladin is told that his hero studied briefly with the Empath monks, but that he had grievous weaknesses that he was striving to overcome in his quest toward Avatarhood. As Deane leaves, Antos comments briefly on his exceptional aura, hinting at the boy's messianic destiny.[5]
