This article is about a boy in Skara Brae. For the ranger in Paws, see Barren.
Barren is a small child living in Skara Brae during Ultima IV.
Description[edit]
Barren could be found near the northeastern road leading out of the city of Spirituality. A boy of few words, the youngster would state simply that he had "no job" and that he was feeling "O.K." Should the Stranger have learned from the beggar woman Ambule that Barren knew of the mantra of spirituality, the child, if asked, would reveal that the word needed for meditation on such a virtue was "Om."[1]
Trivia[edit]
- In the Nintendo remake of Ultima IV (where most character names were omitted and dialogue was significantly modified), Barren can be identified with the girl in the same location. She tells the Stranger that both the rune and the white stone of Skara Brae are missing.[2]
- Ultima IV normally uses "A" as a placeholder for unusable dialog slots. This character has one of them exposed, simply by asking Barren about A.
