Mariah and her apprentice summon you from Earth to the Ancient Moongate. When Horrath attacks, trapping Mariah and infecting her apprentice with the Black Weep, she instructs you to travel through the Passage of Avatars to the Airship, which will take you to Castle Britannia.

Mariah: "Hurry! Summon the hero before the daemons notice."
Apprentice: Stranger, appear! Britannia needs you."
Horrath: So, you think this hero can beat me? They look pathetic."
Mariah: "Begone Horrath!"
Horrath: "My reach is infinite! The Weep cannot be stopped..."
Mariah: "Horrath's creatures are attacking! Move quick!"
Mariah: "Weep-slimes! Kill them quick!"
Mariah: "Quick get me out of here!"
Mariah: "Thank you for freeing me! I owe you my life."
You: "What's going on?"
Mariah: "Horrath attacked us with The Black Weep, a magical plague that kills and mutates... I feat my apprentice may be infected."
You: "Can I help?" (Accept Quest)
Mariah: "I will... deal with him. You should get out of here quickly! Head north through the Passage of Avatars, and jump on the airship. It will take you somewhere safe."
You: "North through the Passage. Got it!"

James: "There's a huge spider... north of here. It's poisoned me... I'm dying for sure... So...thirsty. Wish I'd never tried to rob this place..."
(You have the choice to show Valour, Compassion or Spirituality. Regardless of your choice, James dies. Note at this point you can obtain the quest James' Note.)
