The cloth map

Included with Ultima VIII was this cloth map, showing the island Morgaelin on Pagan.

Description[edit]

Unlike its predecessors, this map has a photo-realistic top down-view of Morgaelin with no indicator where north is supposed to be on the map – though it can be discerned by the position of Tenebrae in the game. While the map is useful for Tenebrae and its immediate surroundings, showing that area in sufficient detail, it gives no indication of the layout of the surrounding Catacombs or the other settlements.

Other Releases of the Map[edit]

While the North American version had a high quality map with strong colors and fine detail, the map in the European version is infamous for its low quality. It has a thick yellow border around it, the cloth is of poor quality, and the colors are so washed out that it is difficult to tell things apart. The European cloth map as used in Germany, France, Italy and the United Kingdom can be seen below. In Europe, the Spanish version only sold with a paper map. The same paper map also is part of the Korean package.

Interestingly, the Taiwanese paper map is totally different. It does sport psychedelic colors which make the map look especially strange. It is unknown, why that was done.

Alternate Maps[edit]

Trivia[edit]

  • Despite being removed from Britannia, the place names still appear in runic.
  • The cloth map is a good indication of how many places in the game have been removed from the released version. See Plot cuts in Ultima VIII.
