This article is about a character from Ultima VI. For a character from Ultima V, see Lord Michael.

Michael, also known as "Blade", is a criminal and murderer, living in a lone house on the road from Britain to Skara Brae in Ultima VI.

Description[edit]

A gruff, mistrustful individual, Michael was responsible for slitting the throat of Quenton of Skara Brae, when Quenton had been unable to repay a loan Michael had given him. To bring further his villainy, he even tried to get close to Quenton's unsuspecting daughter, Marney, believing her to hold affection towards him. When the Avatar met him, Michael was very hostile, not even giving his name. He did let slip that Quenton had not been fortunate, and that it was better to be fortunate than skilled. He further enlightened the Avatar that the murder in Skara Brae had been in relation to an unsettled debt, and that no gargoyle would have killed Quenton as cleanly as the man was killed. The Avatar was unable to bring Michael to justice.[1]

Justice, however, caught up with Michael. Mordra told the Avatar in Ultima VII that the murderer had been sentenced to death by beheading in the High Court at Yew, shortly after the Avatar had left Britannia. A fitting end, she commented.[2]

Gideon, the innkeeper at Skara Brae, commented that Michael had gotten tangled up in the wrong group of kids when he was very young, and said that if he had been raised by someone with a good heart, he might have been one of Lord British's greatest knights.[3]

The Ultima 6 Project[edit]

This is an Ultima 6 Project-related NPC article or section. The information within may not apply to Ultima VI or other Ultima games.

In The Ultima 6 Project, Michael could be found visiting the young fisherman Marney in the evenings at her home, and the young girl admitted having a great deal of affection towards him. The Avatar could personally help bring Michael to justice. After discussing Quenton's death with Marney, the young girl shared her suspicion that it had not been a gargoyle which caused his death, tasking the hero to help discover the true culprit. Marney feared cowardly Trenton had merely absolved himself of responsibility by blaming the gargoyles. After the hero discussed the murder with the citizens of Skara Brae, Michael, and the ghost of Quenton, the Avatar could bring intimate suspicions of Michael's guilt to Marney. The young fisherman, shocked by these accusations, insisted the hero talk to Lenora the druid of Yew to seek justice. Shortly afterwards, Michael was arrested, and he could be found in the Yew jail.

Lore[edit]

This was a sleepy little fishing town, but it hasn't been quite the same since poor old Quenton was murdered. I think that fellow Michael did it. He lives a fair ways outside of town, and mostly keeps to himself. Anyhow, nobody's been able to prove anything, and things have settled down into a routine again — just changed a bit, without Quenton around. I think by now it's best to leave things the way they are, and not go stirring up old wounds.
