Matt is the deaf cook at the Blue Boar Tavern in Ultima VI.

Matt was the loving husband of Anya and the father of Ariana. He was the victim of an unfortunate accident during his youth that left him deaf and dumb. Despite his inability to hear, his daughter ironically became an accomplished bard. His wife constantly lamented his inability to hear his daughter's music. Despite Matt being able to communicate by sign language, the Avatar was unable to talk to him.[1]
Anya begged the Avatar to find a cure for her husband's illness during their journeys, but unfortunately no such remedy was discovered.[2]
The Ultima 6 Project[edit]
This is an Ultima 6 Project-related NPC article or section. The information within may not apply to Ultima VI or other Ultima games.
In The Ultima 6 Project, curing Matt of his deafness was possible. After being told by Anya to find a way, the Avatar set sail for Marsor's Isle, where the evil mage Lorcan resided. As learned in Lorcan's journal, he had accidently created a spell to cure deafness and threw it out in annoyance. The Avatar found the spell in a pile of bodies behind the house and after giving Anya the good news, used it on Matt to restore his hearing. Matt then expressed his gratitude to the Avatar for helping him.
