Ultima VII Part Two
Location: Monitor

Lucilla is the proprietor of The Slashing Sword, a pub in the city of Monitor on the Serpent Isle. She appears in Ultima VII Part Two.

Description[edit]

A Knight of Monitor's Wolf Command, Lucilla owned and operated the city's only tavern, and she had the duty of preparing ceremonial banquet stew for new Knights, using the flesh of whatever totem animal initiates might have had slain in the ordeal at the Knight's Test. Her profession was an inherited one, with her great-grandfather -once a Champion Knight of the city- having founded founded the Slashing Sword, and she was largely content with her position as the city's primary food vendor, joking that serving the many ravenous Knights of Monitor was a Quest of Courage unto itself.[1]

With some well placed inquiries, however, Lucilla would reveal that she was disillusioned with Monitor, feeling that the majority of the city's Knights were more concerned with personal glory and petty infighting that the ideals of Courage upon which the city had been founded.[2] Her winsome looks and flirtatious nature attracted attention, and she had rather pointed opinions about many Monitorian men, disdaining Brendann for his rakishness, Caladin for his brutish nature, and Luther for arrogance.[3] She would further admit to having had some past relationship with Andral, which ended when it became clear that he was more attached to his artistry, and at the time of the Avatar's landing on Serpent Isle, she was involved with Spektor the city's quiet and bookish Treasurer.[4][5]

Should the Avatar expose Spektor as a traitor, Lucilla could be coaxed into some remorseful reflections on their relationship, and would mention that he had entrusted her with a key for safekeeping. Upon being asked, she would surrender this to the Avatar, who could use it to discover Marsten and Spektor's secret cache of explosive powder and the body of Cantra's missing father, who had stumbled upon the two men's secret and been killed for it.[6]

Like most of Monitor, Lucilla perished when Dupre, possessed by the Bane of Wantoness besieged and overthrew the city with an army of Goblins and beasts.

Lore[edit]

As Brendann left , Simon chuckled and said that Brendann and Lucilla often propositioned visitors that came to town. "They're two of a kind, they are."

Trivia[edit]

  • If the Avatar is male, Lucilla will flirt with him and may offer to meet with him privately after the tavern closes at 3:00 AM.[7] Should he bed her, she will offer him a gift of a Gwani-fur cloak, which her father won as a spoil of war after slaying a Goblin chieftain.[8]
  • Should the Avatar be female, Lucilla will be more open about her disdain of the men of Monitor, even warning the Avatar to be wary of Brendann and his womanizing ways.
  • A search of Lucilla's quarters at the inn (which is at the far east end of Kosric Road) will turn up 9 monetari.
  • Lucilla is one of many characters who will not deign to talk at length with the Avatar before the hero becomes a Knight.[9]
  • The Avatar may interrupt Lucilla and Spektor during one of their meetings should the hero come to The Slashing Sword in the late afternoon.
  • Should the Avatar inquire about the strange ring that a Teleport Storm exchanged for the hero's magic gauntlets, Harnna will suggest that Lucilla might know more about it. If asked, Lucilla will remark that it seems pretty and will suggest that it may be an engagement ring.[10][11] As a tavernkeeper, she is also able to identify the bottle the Avatar finds in the woods as being one of Fawnish Ale, which she orders regularly for Simon.
  • Thoxa in Balancing the Scales writes that at the time of her visit to Monitor Simon was running the tavern. Since it contradicts all other information, it has to be an error in the book.
