This is moved from the 'Origin of Names in Ultima' article by DreamFocus as the speculation was more appropriate for the forum.

Ultima was originally going to be titled Ultimatum but that name was already taken so Richard Garriott decided to shorten it to Ultima.

Facts[edit]

People[edit]

Many people were named for people in real life.

Towns[edit]

  • Britain got its name since that's where the character Lord British is from, he also naming his realm Britannia.
  • Cove is a community found in a cove.
  • Jhelum is an actual town which the Wikipedia says is the "city of soldiers or land of martyrs and warriors."
  • Skara Brae is named after a real place. Wikipedia

Theories/guesses[edit]

  • Just a guess about Montor. Montours (Breton: Montourz, Gallo: Montórs) is a commune in the Ille-et-Vilaine department of Brittany in north-western France. Or I see http://www.wordaz.com/montor.html - Promontory means "high point of land or rock projecting into the sea beyond the line of coast; a headland; a high cape." and also "The act of one that doubles; a making double; reduplication;" There are twin cities of montor so that'd make sense.
  • Honor is an intrinsic property of a person, thus Honor is "in Trinsic."
  • Hythloth is perhaps hyth loth. Loth is "a variant spelling of loath, as in lothness". Hythe may refer to a landing-place, port or haven.
  • Paws could've got its name because early on they had tiles the towns, and Britain was large enough they had smaller tiles around it for the various parts. It looked like a paw.
