Corpser
Corpser, from Ultima VII manual
Variants: ice corpsers
First appearance: Ultima V
Last appearance: Serpent Isle

Corpsers are vicious monsters that travel underground.

Description[edit]

No one has ever seen these creatures, apart from the tentacle that suddenly shoots out of the ground to pull the victim under the earth, where it is killed and eaten. The corpser relies on stealth to reach its victim. But once detected, the normal adventurer should have little problem with destroying this abomination. Fire is said to be especially powerful against them.

They can be found in caves and dungeons with soft soil.

Corpsers appeared in Ultima V, Ultima VI, Ultima VII and Ultima VII Part Two. Their stalking technique remained the same throughout.

Lore[edit]

A movement by his feet causes Arionis to halt. Before we can draw our weapons, a great leathery tentacle as thick as a man's leg coils around Arionis then starts dragging him into its underground lair. Noin drives his deadly main gauche into the tentacle. Thick green fluid streams from the severed tentacle as it falls away. As Arionis stumbles to his feet, he quickly shouts a warning. Noin turns to sever a second tentacle just before it ensnares him. Movement in the grass from which we have just come indicates more tentacled monstrosities approaching.
Found only in deep, labyrinthine caverns, these hellish, tentacled ghouls drag their screaming victims into subterranean dens. What fearful end awaits the poor captive none can say. Only a burning flame has been known to have any effect on these creatures of the dark.
This creature is a type of ghoul that ensnares its victims with its tentacles in order to drag them off to its lair and presumably kill them in a manner that has never been discovered. Its only known weakness is fire.
A thorough description of this vile ghoul has never been compiled, for no one has ever survived a close encounter with one. However, once one has made its presence known, it can be identified easily by the tentacles it forces up through the ground to grasp its prey. As with the acid slug, fire is the only reported way to slay a corpser.

Trivia[edit]

  • Corpsers were to be included in the cancelled Ultima X: Ultima X corpser The picture does show the full body of a corpser and what it looks like.
