Browning is a mage living in Moonglow during Ultima IV.

Description[edit]

Browning could be found, along with Shakespeare, in the apothecary, Magical Herbs. If spoken to, he would discuss the need to lead an honest life with the Stranger, professing that an honest soul needs no lies and that real truth will never hurt the teller. More importantly, he would reveal the relation between the principle of Truth and the virtue of Honesty.[1]

Trivia[edit]

NES remake
  • Browning takes his name from English poet and playwright, Robert Browning. The phrase "Truth never hurts the teller," is taken from his poem, Fifine at the Fair, which discusses the emotional relationship between the two sexes and the contrast between capricious desire and the dull permanence of committed Love.
  • In the Nintendo remake of Ultima IV (where most character names were omitted and dialogue was significantly modified), Browning can be identified with the mage in the inn, who gives the same information about Truth and Honesty. Furthermore, an absolutely honest and humble answer to his question will increase the virtues of Humility and Honesty, whereas the wrong answer will reduce them. It should be noted that despite the question's phrasing, the game reads the virtuous answer as being "yes".[2]
