Love is one of the Three Principles of the Eight Virtues of Britannia.

Description[edit]

The principle of Love is necessary for all humans to interact in a civilised manner with each other, to respect the other despite one's own beliefs.

Love is the foundation for the virtues of Compassion, Justice, Sacrifice and Spirituality. By itself, it is the only principle that leads to the virtue of Compassion. The opposite of Love is Hatred, embodied by the Shadowlord Astaroth.

The symbols of Love are the Candle of Love, which was located in the Temple of the Virtues in Cove, and later in Empath Abbey the cloister of Love west of Yew, and the eternal Flame of Love, also located in the Abbey. The village of Cove also in later years dedicated itself to Love due to their closeness to the Shrine of Compassion.

The shrine of Love with the corresponding test is situated on the Isle of Fire. In the test, both of two golems have to be healed from their injuries, proving love for all life, regardless which form it took. The shrine itself disappeared before Ultima IV, when the Isle of Fire sank into the seas, so it wasn't used in the quest for the Avatar. However, the Avatar gained access to the shrine when the Isle of Fire reappeared during Ultima VII, passing the test way over 200 years after the original quest.

Love on Serpent Isle[edit]

The inhabitants of Fawn shunned the principle of Love, instead following the way of Beauty, thus raising Beauty over everything and condemning everything not beautiful. This dedication to superficial Beauty was the original reason why the inhabitants of Old Fawn left Britannia, as their petition to admit Beauty as a ninth virtue was rejected – most likely because the narcissism coming with it does quickly lead to Pride, the opposite of Humility.[Citation needed]

In narcissism-filled Fawn, Prejudice (an Ophidian anti-force of Order) instead runs high, as was shown without shame by the statements of various inhabitants the Avatar spoke to during the visit of the town.

Lady Yelinda is the keeper of the Crystal Rose of Love, the symbol of the principle on Serpent Isle.

Lore[edit]
