Ultima Underworld II
Location: Anodunos

Beatrice is the ghost of Anodunos' former ruler. She may be found haunting the ruins of her destroyed city in Ultima Underworld II.

Description[edit]

Beatrice had been the queen of the prosperous city-state of Anodunos, a power which lay on the southern continent of an unnamed world. Beset with military threats from the northern kingdoms, the sorcerers in Beatrice's court made a pact with an entity known as the Guardian, who won the war against the people of the north in exchange for continued tribute from the Anodunian populace

Eventually, the demands of the Red Titan proved too taxing for Beatrice and her subjects, and they refused to cooperate with him further. In vengeance, the Guardian buried Anodunos under a bed of magical ice, killing all who dwelt there. Beatrice found herself wandering the barren streets of the once proud city even in death, guilt-wracked over the calamity which had claimed her people.

The Avatar ventured to Anodunos while travelling through the black gem and had the opportunity to meet Beatrice and hear her sad tale. Using a magical scepter created by the enchantress Altara, the hero would destroy the Guardian's ability to continue to draw power from the dead city - an act which allowed Beatrice to at last find peace.[1]

Lore[edit]

Know ye then, hero, that I am Beatrice, and I once was mayor of the greatest city on the southern continent, a trading center on the banks of a vast, slow-moving river. It was a tropical city, a single huge market place buzzing with living souls! The Guardian brought that to an end, though that is a story for another time — I must tell thee of our city as it now stands, encased in glacial ice.

Trivia[edit]

  • Bishop managed to contact the spirit of Beatrice and incorporated the story of Anodunos' fall into his work, Gems of Enlightenment. He also added extensive notes as to the perils surrounding the ruins of the lost city, such as that opponents of the Guardian seeking Anodunos may survive the journey there.[2]
