Transcript: Alistair

Alistair is a depressed bard living in Castle Britannia during the events of Ultima V.

Description[edit]

Alistair bemoaned to the Avatar that the castle once had been a happy place, but not since Lord British had disappeared. He remembered how Lord British had been a fair and just ruler, a path very difficult for a monarch. He hoped that one day, Lord British would return.[1]

Alistair shared his quarters with Stephen the lower kitchen chef, and Chuckles, the Royal Jester.

Depressed by the loss of Lord British and the changes wrought under Blackthorn, Alistair's songs had turned dark and moody. If asked to play, Alistair sang about the fair Britanny forests, but despite the upbeat nature of his tune, his mood quickly soured once again when he remembered it was this song that first bade the king to invite Alistair to his castle. If the hero admitted to being the Avatar, Alistair would briefly become optimistic again, hoping the Avatar could rescue Lord British.[2]

Alistair felt he did a better job of maintaining the morale of the castle than Chuckles, whom he felt just annoyed and irritated the inhabitants, mentioning the one time Chuckles put a frog in his lute. He also complained that the kitchen girl, Desiree, always told him to cheer up, even though he felt it his job to cheer her. Alistair further reminisced about how the king had ruled the land with what he felt was a fair and just hand.

In The Ultima 6 Project, a tombstone near the castle in Britain reads, "Now our liege is home once more - Foes exiled on some distant shore. - Alistair, play something cheerful - Of sad laments we've had an earful."
