Alastor Gordon, commonly known by his alias, Lord Whitsaber, is the honorable mayor of Trinsic in Ultima VI and formerly one of the ten pirates of Hawkins.

Description[edit]

With dark origins as first mate to the dreaded pirate Hawkins, Alastor Gordon sought the life of an honest man after the death of his captain, eventually moving to Trinsic and adopting the pseudonym Whitsaber. There, after many years, he rose to the office of mayor, helping to administrate the daily affairs of the walled city. Upon their meeting amidst the Gargish incursion on Britannia, Lord Whitsaber graciously provided the Avatar with the mantra of Honor, as well as pointed the hero to the corresponding rune, which sat atop a pedestal in the center of the city.[1]

While in search of Hawkins' treasure map, the Avatar learned about Whitsaber's buccaneer past from Sandy, a local cook and himself a former associate of the notorious corsair.[2][3] Confronted with his sins, Whitsaber begged the Avatar to keep this matter silent, and after doing so, granted the hero his piece of the treasure map.

Runes of Virtue II[edit]

During Runes of Virtue II, Lord Whitsaber is kidnapped by the Black Knight and imprisoned within the Cavern of Dishonor. Upon being returned to his home, the mayor rewards the hero with the Rune of Honor.

The Ultima 6 Project[edit]

This is an Ultima 6 Project-related NPC article or section. The information within may not apply to Ultima VI or other Ultima games.

In The Ultima 6 Project, Lord Whitsaber's role got extended. He had been visited by a strange figure in a cloak - later revealed to be Beh Lem - and Abelinda, after seeing him talk to this figure, had asked the city gates to be closed for the evening. This proved to be fortuitous, since shortly afterwards, a Gargoyle army arrived and laid siege to the walled city. The Avatar found Whitsaber during the siege shouldering the same work as everyone inside. He readily agreed to Baden's plan to free the city from the Gargoyle threat. He told the hero to inform all townsfolk about the plan before putting it into action, telling the hero who was left to be informed. Once informed that all are in the know, he told the hero to go ahead, as they would be waiting for the right moment to do their part.

When asked about the hooded stranger, the mayor told the Avatar that it all had been a misunderstanding and that he told the stranger to travel to Serpent's Hold. The truth was, that Beh Lem had been asking about the Silver Tablet and pirates and Whitsaber did not want to risk his past being revealed.

It was possible to return the rune to him and later ask for borrowing it again, if the need would arise to use the corresponding shrine.

Lore[edit]

Maybe the lack of trust there has something to do with the tales I hear that Whitsaber has a secret past. Where an old scoundrel like him learned the Mantra of Honor, I can't imagine.

Trivia[edit]

  • As with some of his past crewmates, Alastor Gordon appears to be the satirical namesake of a senior employee at Electronic Arts during the game's development—in this case, chief creative officer William "Bing" Gordon.
  • In Ultima VII, there is a street in Trinsic named Whitsaber Road, after the former mayor.
