Snaz is a beggar (perhaps better classed as a busker or spangler) living on the streets of Britain during Ultima VII.

Description[edit]

Rather than solicit through appeals to pity, Snaz attempted to garner contributions through humor, a common tactic used by panhandlers and spanglers ("spare change artists") both in Britannia and on Earth. The vagrant would "sell" a variety of jokes to passers by for one gold coin apiece, cracking fun at everything from the Fellowship to Lord British in the process. [1]

While Snaz generally seemed jovial and oriented on his sell, the beggar had a cynical and cryptic undertone to many of his jibes, reflecting the declining faith in the Britannian government and the death of magic, and hinting at the Fellowship's sinister practices. He could also prove informative should the Avatar be new to the city, giving hints as to Weston's unjust imprisonment and Sullivan's antics. If asked directly about himself, Snaz would report blithely that life had played a "joke" on him, leaving him a penniless orphan.[2]

Should the Avatar ever ask him to tell his joke about gold, however, Snaz would laugh after accepting his fee, asking if the fleeced hero wished to "hear the joke again." Once his mark caught onto the game, he would congratulate the Avatar for becoming wise to his con.[3]

Trivia[edit]

  • If the Avatar asks for a Fellowship joke while wearing a medallion, Snaz will become uneasy, pleading with the hero that he has a wife and six children (or at least a cat and six kittens) to feed.[2]
  • Carrocio, the operator of various children's shows and games near Castle Britannia will complain that Snaz watches his performances and steals his jokes.[4]
