Santayana is a tall ranger and philosopher of Skara Brae in Ultima IV.

Santayana could be found loitering in Food for Thought. When spoken to, the high-minded ranger would explain that he carried the light of philosophy within his heart and would ask if the Stranger always tread upon the right path, rebuking the hero should such perfection be falsely claimed.[1]
Trivia[edit]
- Santayana takes his name from the Spanish-American philosopher George Santayana. The Ultima character partially quotes Santayana's work The Idea of Christ in the Gospels, stating that "In philosophical minds the familiar excites wonder" (the full quote is "In unphilosophical minds any rare or unexpected thing excites wonder while in philosophical minds the familiar excites wonder also").
- In the Nintendo remake of Ultima IV (Japanese original), either Michaelangelo or Santayana can be identified as a bard in the same location. This character was removed in the English localization.
