Ruskin is a blue ghost who haunts the ruins of old Magincia during the time of Ultima IV.
Description[edit]
If addressed, Ruskin would tell the Stranger it now tried to understand Humility, which is the first test of a great soul. Should the hero have claimed to seek knowledge of Humility, Ruskin would cautiously advise to ask Nate the Snake of the virtue's rune, while warning that the snakes would seek the Stranger's death.[1]
In Ultima V, the returned hero, now the Avatar, could find a gravestone commemorating Ruskin (albeit inscribed "Rushin") in New Magincia, the wandering soul having been laid to rest in the island village upon its resettlement three years prior.
Trivia[edit]
- In the Nintendo remake of Ultima IV (Japanese original), Ruskin can be identified with the ghost in the same location. This character was removed in the English localization.
- Ruskin is named for John Ruskin, a prominent writer and art critic of the Victorian era. The spirit paraphrases his line, "The first test of a great man is humility," from his work, Modern Painters, Volume III.
