This article is about the character from Ultima IV. For the Ultima Underworld character, see Rodrick.
Roderick is a destitute beggar asking for alms outside of Serpent's Hold during Ultima IV.
Description[edit]
Roderick was formerly an adventurer, questing through the dungeons of the realm. After his hand was eaten by a zorn, however, he found himself unable to work, and quickly succumbed to poverty. Directed by Thevel to seek his knowledge of the magic orbs, the Stranger could seek Roderick out, and learn that these strange spheres would serve to raise an adventurer's Strength, Dexterity or Intelligence, albeit at a cost.[1]
Trivia[edit]
- In the alleged journal of the Avatar discovered by historians Robert DeMain and Carlotta Stein, the Stranger recounts in graphic detail how Roderick's withered stump of a hand and gap-toothed smile unnerved them, and notes that they had nightmares shortly after their encounter with the beggar.[2]
- In the Nintendo remake of Ultima IV (where most character names were omitted and dialogue was significantly modified), Roderick can be identified with the beggar in the same location. He does not appear to be an amputee and begs only to feed himself, as he claims to be severely malnourished.[3]
