Two rangers could be found living in Yew during Ultima IV.

Description[edit]

The two rangers could be found at Donnar's "The Dry Goods" store. When addressed, the sleek women would mention that they were searching for a "home in the range", specifically one "where the deer and the antelope play". They would ask if the Stranger knew of such a place, and should the hero answer affirmatively (likely recognizing such a description from a famous Terran ditty) the foresters would continue their description, mentioning that in their desired homeland, "seldom is heard a discouraging word!".[1]

Trivia[edit]

NES remake
  • Should the Stranger claim not to know of a place such as the rangers describe they will chide the hero for ruining their recitation, stating "Ah, what'ya have to ruin it for!"
  • The phrases mentioned by the rangers are partial lyrics to the famous song Home on the Range, the state song of Kansas written in the early 1870s.
  • In the Nintendo remake of Ultima IV (where most character names were omitted and dialogue was significantly modified), one of the Kansas rangers can be identified as the woman in the studio accessible from a staircase behind the healery. Apparently, she managed to find the home she was looking for. Having fulfilled her personal quest, she teaches the Stranger the recipe for the Squish spell (a spell that was introduced in the remake).[2]
