Quaeven is a wingless gargoyle who manages the Recreational Facility and Learning Center in Terfin in Ultima VII.
Description[edit]
Quaeven had had a difficult life as a young gargoyle, likely due to his lack of wings. Having grown up ignored and often mistreated, the Gargish youth sought out solace and acceptance through the philosophical society known as the Fellowship, which gave him a sense of belonging outside of the often cruel caste structure of his people. He eventually came to operate the public recreation halls of the Terfin community, offering the people of the city a place to exercise and study and providing helpful services such as tutoring young gargoyles in Britannian Runes.[1][2]
Should the Avatar speak to Quaeven, the happy gargoyle would extol the virtues of the Fellowship and would eventually attempt to enlist the hero's help in trying to bring his friend, Betra, into the group. Speaking with Betra, however, the Avatar would find the provisioner deeply mistrustful of the society, and he would claim that his friends change in fortunes were entirely due to Quaeven's own strength of character, which needed no Fellowship to bolster it.[3][4][5]
Lore[edit]
“ | The second largest building in Terfin, the Learning Center, is maintained by a young Gargoyle named Quaeven, and was constructed for the sole purpose of instructing Gargoyles. Not only are Gargish and Britannian taught, but Runic, as well. In addition, many works of history and legend from both cultures fill the shelves of the library there. To encourage growth in other directions, there is an entire room devoted to more physical pursuits. – from Key to the Black Gate (Ultima VII)
