Phearcy is the chatty tavernkeeper who owns and operates the Friendly Knave in Moonglow. He appears in Ultima VII.
Description[edit]
Many citizen of Moonglow were quick to recommend Phearcy to the Avatar as a man knowledgeable about the happenings of the city. Should the hero ask him for information, however, the barkeep would move the conversation to the topic of Brion, the head of the Observatory, and Zelda, an adviser at the Lycaeum. Having noted what might be an infatuation between the two, Phearcy was eager to whet his appetite for gossip, and would offer the Avatar a meal at his establishment in exchange for more information.[1]
Should the Avatar investigate the matter, it would be revealed that Zelda was indeed smitten with Brion, although he did not requite her affections. Further prying would reveal that Brion's twin brother, Nelson, was attracted to the reserved scholar, himself, and the hero could eventually bring the two together by speaking with Zelda about Nelson's feelings. Upon delivering a report of all these happenings back to Phearcy, the Avatar would be rewarded with a meal of jerky and ale.
Phearcy also was a member of the Fellowship, although he only had a superficial understanding of their philosophies – misinterpreting the concept of "Worthiness Preceding Reward," as "Thou dost get what thou deservest."[2] During the hours in which he was occupied with the society, he had the local tailor, Carlyn, tend the Friendly Knave in his stead.
Lore[edit]
“ | Thou hast truly come to the right person to learn about our fair city, for I know all that transpires here. I suppose I should begin by discussing The Fellowship.
... Phearcy had nothing more useful to say. However, he did offer to give me a free meal if I could tell him why Zelda brightens up when someone mentions Brion, the man in charge of the observatory. – from Key to the Black Gate (Ultima VII)

Trivia[edit]
- In the Key to the Black Gate, Phearcy provides Anton with information about the city of Moonglow, and his description of the area is a part of the work which the scholar compiles on behalf of the Avatar. Anton is rather unimpressed with Phearcy's knowledge of the area, and mentions that he too, was offered a free meal in exchange for gossip regarding Zelda and Brion. Addom will also claim that he was similarly approached.[3] [4]
- In the SNES-port of Ultima VII, Phearcy has a female sprite and is presumably a woman. Still ever eager to gossip, however, this version of the character discusses at length her misgivings regarding the Fellowship, implying that Balayna has talked to her about Rankin's duplicity.[5]
