Ophelia is a barmaid working in Jhelom in Ultima VII.
Description[edit]
A beautiful but spiteful woman, Ophelia was courted for a length of time by an inexperienced young fighter named Cosmo. Disinterested in him and weary of his attentions, she vowed to marry him, but only if he could locate a unicorn and thereby prove his sexual purity. She believed that the youth would never be able to accomplish such an errand, and boasted openly of her trickery.[1]
While her "beloved" was busy elsewhere, Ophelia worked at Sprellic's Bunk and Stool, where she tended to patrons seeking lodging and traded catty words with her less attractive co-worker and house mate, Daphne. Should the Avatar speak with her, she could tell the hero of the conflict between the establishment's owner and the local fighting academy, the Library of Scars. In the days before a duel between Sprellic and three cadets (Syria, Vokes and Timmons) was to take place, Ophelia was fielding bets in Sprellic's favor, claiming that the mild-mannered innkeeper was the returned Avatar of legend in disguise and that victory would be assured him.[2]
Lore[edit]
“ | Sprellic and his barmaids are never on the field. I doubt Sprellic has ever lifted a blade in his life, except, perhaps, to slice a carrot. And Daphne, well, though she may have the stature of a warrior, I would not be surprised if she was born with a scrub brush in her hand. Ophelia is no more useful with a weapon, and even less so with a mop. She's got a mean streak, though. Never cross her without a reason. Despite their own lack of fighting or combat skills, these two do share a discriminating eye in that direction. If thou ever dost wish to wager on a duel, speak with Daphne or Ophelia. – from Key to the Black Gate (Ultima VII)

Trivia[edit]
- Ophelia's claims about Sprellic will change depending on the Avatar's gender. Should the hero be male, she will claim that Sprellic is the Avatar himself. Whereas, if the Avatar is female, she will merely claim that Sprellic can summon the Avatar to his side.[2]
- While it is possible for the Avatar to convince a unicorn known as Lasher to assist Cosmo in his task, the ultimate fate of Cosmo and Ophelia is never made explicit in the series.[3]
- The only way to ensure that Sprellic loses his duel is to kill him. If the player does so, Ophelia will voice her suspicions that the hero is the murderer.[4]
- In the SNES Port of Ultima VII, Ophelia is characterized as a genuinely sweet woman who has been working at the Bunk and Stool since her childhood, and who worries greatly over the fate of her employer. No mention is made of her having an suitors.[5]
