Nicholas is a foundling child, living in the nursery of Castle Britannia during Ultima VII.
Description[edit]
According to his caretaker, Nanna, Nicholas was abandoned in front of the castle, and has been living as a ward of the state since. Barely verbal, Nicholas had little to say to the Avatar if spoken to, and was liable to soil his diapers in the hero's presence. The champion of virtue would then be asked, either by an exasperated Nanna or through the gesticulations of the messy toddler, to change the wet nappy for a fresh one.[1]
During the catastrophe which befell Castle Britannia in Ultima Underworld II, Nicholas and the other children of the nursery were thankfully away from the castle with Sherry the Mouse and Boots, and thus avoided imprisonment within the Guardian's blackrock dome.
Trivia[edit]
- According to technical documents for the game, Nicholas' portrait is based upon a person known as Nicholas Gardner, who is possibly the son of Ultima VII associate producer, Alan Gardner. The latter also appears in the game as Alagner.[2]
- If Nanna is present during a conversation with Nicholas, she will correct her pronunciation of his name (which she gives as "Nick-las") and will generally fill in what the toddler is attempting to communicate through his excited "whees" and "yooohs".
- Nicholas, like all of the nursery children, will ignore the Avatar if spoken to while in the midst of a game of tag.
