This article is about a character from Ultima VII. For the Ultima IV character, see Joseph (U4).
Joseph is the mayor of Jhelom in Ultima VII.[1]
Description[edit]
Still a youthful politician, Joseph could speak at length about the local enthusiasm for dueling, claiming that his job required equal practice with both the pen and the sword to keep the peace.[2] He explained that most duels in the city were duels of honor—to first blood rather than death, and that one of the more popular subjects of contention was the Fellowship, which had many fighters seeing combat over the question of its validity.[3][4] He would confide in the hero, if asked, that he felt the organization was foolish, but claimed that he needed to maintain neutrality on the topic publicly. When asked about Elizabeth and Abraham he acknowledged their recent presence in Jhelom.[5]
If asked about the situation with Sprellic, an innkeeper who had run afoul of the prestigious Library of Scars, Joseph confessed to being unsettled by the affair, but explained that he wasn't in a position to intervene. He would admit that he feared Master De Snel, the headmaster of the Library, and would confess to the hero that he worried that the man would have him killed if he attempted to meddle in his affairs.[6]
Lore[edit]
“ | Even our mayor, Joseph, has become involved in the sparring. I would not have thought he had it in him, since I am aware of no campaigns he participated in. Well, it just goes to show thee, the spirit and love of battle has possessed everyone here. – from Key to the Black Gate (Ultima VII)
