Ian is the director of the Fellowship's Meditation Retreat during Ultima VII.
Description[edit]
A genial and friendly man, Ian led active Fellowship members in exercises designed to help them hear and embrace their "Inner Voice", and was likely also involved in the training of professional recruiters for the organization. Working on the shadow of the Cube Generator, the meditation director was, knowingly or not, exposing his pupils to the intrusive words of the Guardian and convinced them that such intrusive thoughts were borne of their own psyches.[1][2]
Should the Avatar come to the shores of the Meditation Retreat in search of the generator without first becoming a confirmed member of the Fellowship, Ian would withhold the key necessary to enter the compound.
Lore[edit]
“ | On this island is, not surprisingly, the Meditation Retreat of The Fellowship. I can tell thee nothing of this place, save for the name of the man who is in charge, for Ian will permit on Fellowship members within its gates. However, outside of this restriction, he is friendly, and will answer any questions he deems appropriate. – from Key to the Black Gate (Ultima VII)

Trivia[edit]
- It is possible to bypass the necessity of joining the Fellowship to placate Ian and gain entry to the retreat. By using the Magic Carpet, the player can land on the inner portion of the retreat's grounds without needing a key.
- In the SNES-port of Ultima VII, the character Crispin replaces Ian.
- Numerous cults use isolation and "special seminars" in remote locations in the course of indoctrinating new recruits. The Church of Scientology, in particular, features a series of "courses" in which students engage in hypnotic drills which many ex-members claim to have a disorienting effect which leaves them open to suggestion.[3]
